In the heart of Oakhurst, California, Mountain Unitarian Universalist Church stands as a shining example of compassion, community, and commitment. Since opening its doors on February 2, 2025, this remarkable congregation has dedicated itself to serving the homeless and unhoused, creating a safe space where dignity, support, and care are always within reach. Even before opening, the church was actively involved with other local organizations, laying the foundation for what has quickly become a hub of hope and transformation.
On an average week, Mountain UU reaches 5–10 individuals directly, while during its major food distribution events, it serves 50–100 people, illustrating the breadth of its impact. Every interaction, whether big or small, is rooted in the church’s mission to empower, support, and uplift every person who comes through its doors or encounters its outreach programs.
Comprehensive Services Designed to Meet Every Need
Food and Pantry Services
At the core of Mountain UU’s outreach is its fully stocked, zero-barrier food pantry. Here, anyone in need can access food without paperwork, ensuring that hunger never becomes a barrier to help. Beyond the pantry, volunteers deliver food and nutritious snacks directly to those who are homebound or living on the streets. Every snack served after church thoughtfully includes protein, reflecting the church’s commitment to health and nourishment. Looking ahead, Mountain UU eagerly anticipates partnering with Soup for Friends to further expand its meal offerings and feed even more people in the community.
Clothing, Essentials, and Household Support
Mountain UU goes far beyond food. It collects and distributes clothing, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies, pet food, blankets, camping equipment, and small household appliances, ensuring that every individual has access to the essentials they need to survive and thrive. All items are available for pickup at the pantry or via delivery, creating a flexible and accessible system that meets people where they are.
Shelter and Outreach Programs
While Mountain UU does not have a facility for shelter, the church collaborates with Sierra Vista Presbyterian, providing volunteers to support temporary housing efforts. Pastor T and volunteers actively track local encampments and low-income housing locations, visiting regularly to provide essential supplies, food, and care. This proactive approach ensures that no one is overlooked, no matter how transient their situation.
Spiritual Guidance, Life Skills, and Personal Empowerment
Mountain UU is committed to addressing the whole person. Pastor T provides compassionate spiritual guidance, helping individuals navigate challenges with empathy, support, and hope. In addition, the church collaborates with organizations like RH Community Builders and Madera County Behavioral Health, connecting community members to mental health support and counseling. The church also partners with River Grove Apartments to provide life skills and budgeting guidance, assisting people in gaining the tools they need for independence and stability. Volunteers help with job applications, resume building, and skills training, meeting people at local libraries or other accessible locations.
Health and First Aid Support
Although the church does not have licensed medical professionals on staff, it maintains a robust supply of first aid materials. Volunteers with prior medical experience are available to provide guidance, ensuring that minor health needs are addressed and safety is prioritized.
A Model of Accessibility and Inclusion
Mountain UU’s services are entirely free and open to anyone in need. The food pantry is accessible almost every day, with volunteers available to meet people wherever they are, whether at the church, their homes, or local encampments. Spiritual guidance is offered by appointment, and outreach trips provide a direct line of support for those who might otherwise go without.
Partnerships That Strengthen the Community
The church’s impact is amplified through strong partnerships with local and regional organizations, including:
- Madera County Food Bank
- Grace Community Church (North Fork)
- Madera County Behavioral Health
- RH Community Builders
- Self-Help Enterprises
- Soup for Friends
- Sierra Vista Presbyterian
- Yosemite Democrats
Volunteers are essential to Mountain UU’s programs. They help with food distributions, organize large donations, or accompany outreach trips. The church also maintains an Amazon wish list, with blankets currently being the most urgent need, allowing donors to make a direct impact on the community.
Connect, Volunteer, and Make a Difference
Pastor T serves as the primary contact for anyone interested in learning more, volunteering, or donating.
